How to read this site

Choosing scripts

Every verse is here in Devanagari, Tamil and IAST. Open Reading settings (the Aa button at the top right) and turn any of them on or off; on a wide screen the script buttons are also in the top bar. Choose a main script to put it first and largest. Your choice is remembered, and links you share carry it.

Reading several scripts together

When more than one script is on, Show scripts offers two layouts:

Scrolling, pages or one verse at a time

Under View: Scroll reads like a long page; the top bar stays in place and shows which verse you are on. Pages turns pages: tap the left or right edge, swipe, or use the arrow keys. One verse dims everything except the verse you are on; step with the arrows at the bottom, or the j and k keys.

The same panel sets the text size, line spacing and theme (Auto follows your device; Day, Sepia, Night). Keep the screen on stops the phone from dimming while you chant.

Finding your place

The menu button at the top left lists the verses of the collection and all the collections. The top bar always shows which verse you are on. The main page remembers where you stopped, under Continue reading, and the search box there finds words inside verses as well as titles; it ignores diacritics, so hiranya finds hiraṇya.

Reading the notation

The text keeps the chant notation of the source. Here is a sample verse as it appears on the site:

देवनागरी
भगोनचित्राः ॥ अग्निर्म्महोs२३नाs३म् ॥ दाs२धाs२३४औहोवा ॥ एs३ । तिरत्नाs२३४५म् ॥
தமிழ்
பகோநசித்ரா: || அக்நிர்ம்மஹோs23நாs3ம் || தாs2தாs234ஔஹோவா || ஏs3 | திரத்நாs2345ம் ||
IAST
bhagonacitrāḥ || agnirmmahos23nās3m || dās2dhās234auhovā || es3 | tiratnās2345m ||

देव पूजा, verse 10

Numbers above the syllables are the svara marks of the chant.

Small numbers set low beside a syllable belong to the same notation.

A line over a syllable (overline) marks the syllables the source treats as prayankana stobha.

Coloured letters show the third and fourth consonants of each class (varga 3 and 4) and the vocalic ṛ, ṝ, ḷ, ḹ, so they are easy to spot.

To get a short reminder when you tap a mark in a verse, turn on Explain a chant mark when I tap it in Reading settings.

Draft: please review and expand this section with what each number means in your tradition, and with any notes on stobha and the other signs.

Saving, sharing and offline reading

Beside each verse number, the star saves the verse to a list on the main page, and the share button sends a link that opens straight at that verse. Save for offline in Reading settings keeps a collection on your device so it opens without a connection; the main page can save every collection at once. On a phone you can also add the site to your home screen.

Collections are published one per page; please keep the source and copyright notice in the footer when you share the text.
